Wicked Sweet

April 30, 2009

Apparently, people who are “sweet” should stay out of the rain. They’re so sweet because they must be made of sugar. Water melts sugar. So sweet people melt in the rain or when otherwise wet.

But then how come the Wicked Witch of the West melted when water got sprinkled on her? She wasn’t sweet… or was she?

Now that I think about it, maybe the Wizard, Munchkins, and Witch of the North weren’t as “good” as we might believe. Maybe the Wicked Witches of East and West were actually the good ones. Is it out of prejudice for green-skinned women that they are dubbed evil?

Or is it because the Witch of the West kept trying to kill Dorothy?

Then again, that’s not a mystery. If you crushed my sister with a house, I’d want to beat you to a pulp, too!

Service Learning

April 28, 2009

Alright, this is another one of those entries that most of my NYRAnian friends will be wanting my head on a platter for, but screw those whiny idiots, I’m saying it anyway.

I really don’t have a problem with the student service learning hours that are required for a high school diploma.

“Oh, WTF, Katrina?! We thought you were a youth rights supporter! How can you be okay with being forced to do community service?”

Funnily enough, the main difference here is how I’m choosing to look at it. It’s not forced community service, or at least calling that misses the point. It’s more a very freeform homework assignment.

To Prove Their Mousey Worth

April 24, 2009

Although I touched on this subject once before in my short little piece Mouse Talk, I figured this was worth an entry spelling out my position a bit more on this. The subject is, of course, animal testing in labs.

Got to thinking about it again when I heard about a protest supporting it at UCLA to counter the protests of the violent animal rights extremists.

In general, I’m not going to think too harshly of the people against it. Their hearts are in the right place anyway. The ones who need to chill the hell out, though, are the ones that see fit to attack the researchers violently and destroy their property. I mean, what the hell does that even accomplish? It’s terrorism! They think by threatening the researchers they’ll cave and understand their position?

Getting Better

April 17, 2009

There are times back in college I thought that I would major in history. It’s always fascinating and my grades in it were somewhat good. Higher than my science grades anyway, even though I was of course a science major! Then again, it is because I went with biology that I’m currently sitting here at my desk in my lab and not behind a convenience store counter some place. Hehe.

But who says history needs to be a profession? Who says learning always must involve a formal school with the goal of some sort of employment? Lots of people get bottlenecked there and it’s very sad.

Anyway, to get to my point, and it’s a point I’ve made before so I may be repeating myself a bit, there is one thing that becomes very clear the more to delve into what different societies have been like over the millennia… The world is getting better.

Brian Loves Lois

March 23, 2009

So for perhaps the billionth time, the Family Guy episode “Brian in Love” was on the other night. From the second season, the episode begins with Stewie allegedly having a problem peeing all over the house, and no one believes him when he denies it. We soon learn it’s actually Brian the dog doing it involuntarily and allowing Stewie to take the blame. This is revealed when he pees in front of them at a supermarket, so he is sent to a psychiatrist after it’s apparently determined the problem isn’t physical. The shrink suggests Brian go out and see the world, which he does and the problem seems solved! But Stewie’s annoyed for taking the blame before, so he pees all over the house for real, and sure enough Brian takes the blame, and he laments that he doesn’t even remember doing it. So he returns to the shrink where Brian mentions a time Peter and Lois were getting romantic with each other, so when Brian describes Lois some more after the shrink asks him to, the shrink tells him it means he must be in love with her, and when Brian denies it, the shrink says “who are you trying to convince, me or you?” at which point Brian is convinced it is true. So he tries to come on to Lois, and fails miserably, but Stewie notices what’s happening and decides to troll him with it by pretending to be all affectionate with his mother. Brian decides he’d better confront Lois, and she picks up on what’s happening and tells him their friendship is great and there’s no reason for anything more, and Brian seems satisfied with that.

Bishop Excommunicates Mother and Doctors of 9yo Girl’s Abortion

:dubious:

Basically, a 9-year-old girl in Brazil was raped by her stepfather, and she got pregnant with twins. Doctors determined she wouldn’t be able to survive the pregnancy so they had to terminate it to save her life. Even to prolifers like me, sounds reasonable. Rape and the mother’s life being on the line are generally the exceptions to the “abortion is wrong” idea, and this is clearly both. Unfortunate, yes, but obviously necessary, and honestly, there is just all around nothing whatsoever fortunate about this situation.

Mmmm, Candy Hearts 4

February 14, 2009

Another Valentine’s Day has come upon us, so here is another lecture for all you semi-happy couples out there for you to know that YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG!!!

Why? Because you people can’t just simply let the relationship be one part of your lives. You seem to think you have to give your entire life to the relationship! And when you do that, you’re going to have a bad time.

For example, if your significant other is a vegetarian, do you feel obligated to become one yourself (whether or not your partner requests it)? If your answer to that question is yes, then YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.

Long Expected Party

January 20, 2009

Now for a presidential, executive edition of…

Here’s to You!!!!

So I raise my glass and say, “Here’s to you, President Barack Obama!”

I have two songs floating around in my head. One of them is “Wind of Change” by the Scorpions. The other one is “Won’t Get Fooled Again” by the Who. I’m somewhere in between.

So today at work most of us were on CNN.com streaming the inauguration, not getting much work done but no one really cared.

Red Eyes Are Shut

January 6, 2009

Normally, this is where I’d mention that today is Epiphany, the last day of the 2008 Christmas season, and all that jazz, but there’s something else that bears a mention.

Because, sometime yesterday, my little red eye tetra friend Cedric, after four years and seven months, finally swam off to fishy heaven. 🙁

Weird to think of how long it’s been. I got him only just over a year after I graduated from college. I had only just recently gotten into NYRA, and it was two months before I became a paid member and joined the forums. When I got him, I hadn’t even worked yet. Through all the NYRA stuff and all the various jobs I’ve had and other little adventures, Cedric was always right there in the tank, swimming around, his bright red eyes searching for whatever.

Elusive 2009

January 1, 2009

So that psychopathic monster known as 2008 has finally come to an end. But… what shall 2009 be?

Win? Fail? Lulz? I think lulz.

Anyway, did you make a resolution? No? Good, resolutions are for losers. And how can you make one? This brand new year is a total mystery. We don’t know what’s going to happen. I mean, things should remain pretty much the same, but other shit happens. Goes beyond the win, fail, or lulz question. Right now, we’re wandering into a dark quiet forest, that may either turn out to be just a nice quiet stroll or blindly parading yourself to doom at the claws of a myriad of forest creatures.

So enjoy your hike, but, well, bring a weapon. Just in case.
