Brian Loves Lois

March 23, 2009

So for perhaps the billionth time, the Family Guy episode “Brian in Love” was on the other night. From the second season, the episode begins with Stewie allegedly having a problem peeing all over the house, and no one believes him when he denies it. We soon learn it’s actually Brian the dog doing it involuntarily and allowing Stewie to take the blame. This is revealed when he pees in front of them at a supermarket, so he is sent to a psychiatrist after it’s apparently determined the problem isn’t physical. The shrink suggests Brian go out and see the world, which he does and the problem seems solved! But Stewie’s annoyed for taking the blame before, so he pees all over the house for real, and sure enough Brian takes the blame, and he laments that he doesn’t even remember doing it. So he returns to the shrink where Brian mentions a time Peter and Lois were getting romantic with each other, so when Brian describes Lois some more after the shrink asks him to, the shrink tells him it means he must be in love with her, and when Brian denies it, the shrink says “who are you trying to convince, me or you?” at which point Brian is convinced it is true. So he tries to come on to Lois, and fails miserably, but Stewie notices what’s happening and decides to troll him with it by pretending to be all affectionate with his mother. Brian decides he’d better confront Lois, and she picks up on what’s happening and tells him their friendship is great and there’s no reason for anything more, and Brian seems satisfied with that.

Temporarily, of course, seeing as Brian having the hots for Lois has been a very long running meme on the show! A meme which began with this episode.

But, wait, how did this meme come to be again? Let’s look back at a few things during the plot.

Brian was thought to be cured after he traveled a bit, until it was discovered he was having more accidents, ones he didn’t remember. But those weren’t his accidents at all; it was Stewie framing him. So it could be assumed that Brian was in fact cured of this problem, and that his return to the shrink was completely unnecessary. And that maybe he really wasn’t in love with Lois at all and that he merely made himself believe it after the shrink insisted he did.

I mean, seriously, look again at the scene when he returns to the shrink. Brian mentions Peter was washing his car when Lois came home with groceries, and Peter started spraying her with the hose, and they played with the hose some before making out. Brian figures all the running water did it, but then the shrink asks him about Lois. Brian describes Lois as a wonderful woman, and the shrink tells him he loves her, and Brian retorts with “What? No! I’m not in love with her!” and the shrink replies with “who are you trying to convince, Brian, me or you?” which, as already said, causes Brian to decide he must in fact be in love with Lois.

Now… WTF was that?! I mean, is there any way Brian could possibly have answered the shrink’s assertion that he loved Lois that wouldn’t have caused the shrink to be all “you’re lying, you love her and you’re denying it, I know better than you do” basically? And Brian, so mentally immobilized by the shame of his accidents (you know, the ones he wasn’t actually having anymore, but was so mentally immobilized still, or just fucking stupid, not to call bullshit on the fact that he didn’t remember them or to remember there is someone in that house with a history of trolling him, someone whom he’d allowed to take the blame for the accidents earlier in the episode!), just falls for it hook, line, and sinker.

Might also wonder that these “accidents” seem to have stopped after this pseudo-revelation, even though it was actually Stewie doing it. Stewie probably saw no need anymore since he now had Brian apparently being in love with Lois to troll him with. Of course, the show has a way of dropping elements of an episode’s plot abruptly anyway.

So leaves me to wonder whether the bit about Brian’s thing for Lois really just being the shrink’s invention was something the show writers put in intentionally or not. There have been a few episodes with some subtle other things going on (none of which I can recall at the moment, though), so wouldn’t be surprised.

Maybe Seth MacFarlane’s way of saying “ZOMG, teh shrinks are eval!!!!1!” Even if everything the shrink did wasn’t so much how they actually are but more how they’re always portrayed on TV (i.e. telling you you’re in pain, convincing you that you have feelings that you don’t). Of course, most people wouldn’t know the difference anyway. 😆

(Oh, and to quell the obvious here, don’t bother commenting with any stupid crap like “durr, it’s just a TV show, you must have a lot of time on your hands”. Just be making yourself look stupider than you think you’d be making me look!)

  1. I think Brian really was in love with Lois, since he showed sings of it before that episode. But I’ve never thought of that before. Nice observation.
