Muvico’s Modern Segregation

September 28, 2007

This article is a little old now, but still worth discussing.

Muvico Makes Adults Only Theater

Can you believe that? For those who didn’t feel like reading it, or were suffering too much from a rapidly melting brain which tends to happen when exposed to such high levels of astounding idiocy, basically the Muvico movie theater company is planning to set aside one screen in their facilities for just people 21 and over.

There’s a Mine Detector!

September 6, 2007

So today at work, I was bored and, thinking about that video I posted about the other day, felt like seeing what Wikipedia had to say about Minesweeper. Pretty interesting tidbits about the different versions. I had played the Linux Gnomes version last year when I was in California, since Chris Howell’s computer operated on Linux.

Anyway, then I came to the thing that blew my mind. The cheats section. Normally, I disapprove of cheats. But I was still curious. I’d seen one before that isn’t really a cheat since it doesn’t always work, but works most of the time from what I could tell. When you’re playing Minesweeper and you’re down to where you have to guess between two adjacent squares, try to click the exact middle between them, and it’ll be the number. Doesn’t always work, and might just be a myth, but something.

It’s Always “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

May 28, 2007

I hereby decree…

It’s always “Smells Like Teen Spirit”!

Always. No question. No doubt. Hell, was probably true before the song even came out. Whenever a radio station is doing a big ass top some-number list of greatest alternative rock songs (provided it includes the 1990’s, if it were just this decade, it MIGHT not be on there, but no guarantee on that), then Nirvana’s famous “Smells Like Teen Spirit” will be number one.

So, yeah, DC 101 just did a huge ass Top 500 list this weekend of “greatest alternative rock songs of all time”. I didn’t even know they were doing this until yesterday, when they were in the 140’s or something, but ever since all I could think was “Smells Like Teen Spirit” will be number one.

And it is. Just now finishing, actually. No surprise. #2 was Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy”. #3 was Nine Inch Nails’s “Closer”. Then a bunch of other stuff.

DC 101 will post the full list on their website tomorrow, apparently. I’ll be there to snatch it and check out the whole thing, and post it here for you. I’ll link to it, but knowing them, it’ll only be up for like a day. I’ll immortalize it here with some notes as to which songs are awesome and you should like along with songs that suck and you should hate. Got it?

What do I think of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”? On one hand, sounds like teenage stereotypical crap (maybe, I’m not sure if anyone actually knows what that song is about). Don’t know. But, shit, if fucking Paul Anka covers it (badly), you know it’s made some headway!

Speaking of long ass lists, I still have the top 500 songs WHFS (who is no longer around, which sucks, they’re a fucking Maryland legend!) compiled at the end of 1999 of best songs of the 1990’s. Yes, of course, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is number one. I’ll post that list, too. Why not? 😀

This has been Day 5 of the 100 Days of Summer, Round 7.

Hey, Pensacola!

February 20, 2007

Was checking my site logs and happened upon a couple of referrals from the Pensacola News Journal. Sigh. It’s so typical.

http://forums.pnj.com/viewtopic.php?t=11487

Basically, a couple of guys figured they’d bring up the topic of youth rights to the happy little denizens of the news journal forums. Not surprisingly, they weren’t well received. They stated their case (somewhat) coolly, only to be met with know-it-all attitudes and patriarchal pandering. Again, not surprising.

Go Austria!

January 13, 2007

My good NYRA friend Keith Mandell showed me this earlier.

Austrians Split at Voting at Age 16 Plan

VIENNA, Austria — Austria’s new coalition government says 16-year-olds _ who can already vote in some local races _ should also be allowed to cast ballots in national elections.

But the country is split on lowering the voting age from 18. Some think 16-year-olds are not sufficiently interested or mature enough to have a say in national affairs but others welcome the change.

“Adolescents aren’t any less interested in politics than other groups,” said Reinhard Zuba of the Austrian Institute for Youth Research, citing recent studies on the topic.

One such study, carried out with the Vienna-based SORA Institute after local elections in Vienna in October 2005, showed 59 percent of 16- to 18-year-olds cast a ballot.

That turnout was about the same as other age groups, said SORA co-director Christoph Hofinger, adding that lowering the voting age to 16 _ or even 14 _ could help counterbalance the views of an increasingly aging population, a common phenomenon across Europe.

In Europe, and around the world, the voting age is commonly 18 _ with some exceptions. In Iran, 15-year-olds can vote and in Cuba, Nicaragua and the Isle of Man, off the coast of Britain, 16-year-olds can cast ballots. On the other end of the spectrum, the age in Italy for voting for the Senate is 25.

The proposal to lower the age comes from Austria’s “grand coalition” of Social Democrats and the conservative People’s Party following elections on Oct. 1. But it was not a major campaign issue.

“I’d vote if I could because I get a bit worked up about what politicians do without asking us,” said 15-year-old Katharina Wurian.

Maria Finz-Lucchi, a history teacher in Vienna, said she too supports the proposal.

“It would teach young people to take responsibility,” she said.

But Willi Geser, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Innsbruck, is skeptical.

“If one decreases the voting age, then one has to do more to promote political education in the schools,” he said.

Oh, awesome! More and more people are seeing the light. A lower voting age is a GOOD thing!

And I just can’t stop thinking of The Sound of Music right now. 😆

Big Puzzle

January 5, 2007

OMG! OMG! OMG!!! Awesome! 😀

So today at work, instead of working on stuff I probably should have been working on, I did what I do every day. I went to one of my favorite sites and did the daily puzzles there. It’s BrainBashers.com if you want to check it out. Brain teasers. Illusions. Puzzles. Other similar crap. In other words, totally my kind of place! The Fun Stuff section kicks all kinds of ass.

Merry Christmas!!!

December 25, 2006

Not sure what to say, so I shot a video of me rambling in front of the tree.

Took forever to upload, but whatever.

http://www.eightminefortress.com/xmasvideo

It’s password protected so bots don’t download them and run out my bandwidth. They are huge files. You’ll need Quicktime to see them.

UN: xmas
PW: tree

This will only be valid for about a week, too.

And, yeah, there are two videos. For also included is the NEVER BEFORE SEEN video from last year’s Christmas!

But that’s my present to you. So rather than just reading my ramblings, you can see and hear my ramblings in my horrible voice. Enjoy!

Random Entries

September 30, 2006

Scroll down a ways and look to your right. Um, make sure you scroll back up here afterwards. Hehe.

Yup. Under the admin links and crap, I’ve added a Random Entries spot. Differs from the “Recent Entries” thing I’ve bitched about before seeing as these are for entries that aren’t right here on the main page anymore. A downside to this blog format is that there are so many awesome rants and pieces I wrote back in the day that fall out of sight. You people forget about them like the disrespectful maggots you are. But now they’re right there. A randomly generated list of some good old entries. The nostalgia!

Remember these? Oh, Pet Store! That was a good one. Don’t forget I’m American!, the little bit about politically correct terms. How can you pass up Behind Every Bag of Chips or Christian War? This is some good shit!

So, yeah, take this as a friendly reminder that there’s lots of good shit to read around here. I’m not reminding you for my own benefit. I remind you for your own. It’s good stuff. You should be so privileged. Now get reading! :doitnow:
