You Can Cast Spells While Listening To Your iPod!

January 30, 2006

Well, that’s about the only explanation I can give. Because it seems every time you see some picture of someone listening to an MP3 player, he or she is in this very intense, wizard-like pose. You know the one. Knees bent. Feet apart. One arm flexed with the fingers tightened at about ear-height. The other arm is stretched, palm out, fingers apart.

Now, I’ve never seen anyone actually looking like this while listening to their headphones. In fact, what are they doing? Here’s what I think.

#1: They’re aspiring baseball pitchers. They’re trying to practice their fastballs, but are still in the preliminary practice stages. They have yet to graduate to practicing with an actual ball. Probably a good thing. Would you want someone skipping down a city sidewalk hurling baseballs every which way while jamming to Gwen Stefani?

#2: They just received their Hogwarts acceptance letters but have yet to realize casting spells doesn’t involve weird hand movements. They’ll know better once they pay old Ollivander a visit.

#3: They’re martial arts students. Judging from the pose, probably not very good ones. Who’s your sensei? Get a better one. You’re just embarrassing yourself.

#4: The pose is a mating ritual from some unknown, nearly-extinct Pacific island tribe. The guys keep this pose hoping to find a girl from one of these tribes in the city crowd. This way, they can reunite long lost members of the tribe and do a good deed.

#5: They all have wedgies.

#6: They drank a stale can of pineapple Fanta that someone told them would make them invisible. It explains their weird movements. It’ll also explain a sudden race for the bathroom before long.

#7: These music players possess their listeners. The pose is just an outward effect to them receiving messages from overlords in outer space.

#8: They believe that the stupidest they look while listening to their MP3 player, they just might attract the attention of the music folks at MSN and Yahoo!. Makes perfect sense to me. Just look on those pages.

Speaking of MSN and Yahoo! music pages, would one of them please finally have the old ’80s song “Major Tom” by Peter Schilling available? MSN doesn’t have it. Yahoo! has it listed but doesn’t actually have it available. I even installed iTunes for the sole purpose of seeing if they’ve got it, but all they have is the German version! What the hell? Grrr.

But, I digress.

Maybe I should get an MP3 player one of these days. I don’t know if I want an iPod but the Creative ones look good, too. Don’t know. Either way, I can’t wait to find out what magical powers it will give me! I believe I got the impression an ordinary walkman would do the same. I first got one of those almost ten years ago, but I have yet to receive any of the promised magical powers. But I’m faithful that it’ll be different with an iPod! Just you wait. 😀
