You’re Deprecated!

It hit me just right. I finally discovered I can set the target attribute for the Friends of the Fortress links so they open in a new window. Quite glad I could do so without diving into the PHP code, which undoubtedly would not turn out well. Then I saw it. On the WordPress admin page for adding a link, when I finally spotted the Target radio buttons at the very bottom, I saw the following:

(Note that the target attribute is illegal in XHTML 1.1 and 1.0 Strict.)

Reread that a few times and let it sink in.

That’s right. A perfectly fine attribute to the A tag, which does the nice useful job of directing where the link opens, is apparently too old and should not be used anymore. I mean, all the browsers still recognize it and all. What’s the big deal? Nope. Someone invented XHTML along with a set of nonsense rules to go with it, so now the proper way to design a web page is to obey their rules. No deprecated tags!

And I say… Fuck you!

Guess what, losers. I use the target attribute and have every intention to continue using it. What can I say? I’m totally anal when it comes to ensuring exterior webpages open in a new window. Target blank! Target blank! Target blank!

You know what else? Brace yourself for this one. I sometimes use…. the CENTER tag! Oh, no! Oh, yes! Hahaha. Hmmm. Despite being… *gulp*…. deprecated, it still works in Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, and Firefox. Well! Imagine that. You know what other tag I use often? Hold onto your hat for this…. the FONT tag! That’s right. Instead of delving into CSS intricacies, despite being usually useful for stuff HTML can’t do alone, I just slap together a FONT tag with a color and size attribute, maybe a font face, and I’m good to go. And wouldn’t you know it! IE, Netscape, Opera, and Firefox don’t seem to have a problem with that either. They display is just fine.

In fact, even though I stopped a bit ago, I used to use frames.

I also don’t put a slash on the ends of IMG and BR tags! Oh, my God, stop me before I write out six Fs for white instead of only three.

Don’t forget tables. You can’t not use tables, whether you overly progressive web design “lawmakers” think so or not. CSS can’t substitute that. It can dictate certain aspects of the tables, but it can’t substitute them. Even if it could, I don’t care. I like my tables. Well, I hate how they ignore font settings so you have to set the font settings or give a P tag to every single TD, but whatever. That’s another problem. CSS doesn’t even touch text that’s not inside a tag. Shit, I’ve got lots of that around. What gives? *looks away in a huff* FONT tag would.

It’s okay, though. Netscape recognizes my code. IE recognizes my code. Firefox recognizes my code. Opera recognizes my code. So it’s all good.

It hit me just right.
