Three Square Meals

Filed under: Christmas Time!,Foodz,What the hell? — Katrina @ 7:14 pm

Whose dumbass idea was it that we have to eat three full-sized meals per day, whereas snacking is discouraged?

You know who has the right idea? The Greeks. And some other Mediterranean cultures (take your pick, very little difference). Specifically the concept of “mezze”. They’re like appetizers, but a lot of them, different ones. Some dolmathakia here. Some melitzanosalata and some pita bread there… Okay, fine, rather, some stuffed grape leaves here and some eggplant dip with pita bread there… *mutters something about uncultured swine*

Little bit of a bunch of stuff eaten like a snack over the course of a day that ends up adding up to you getting all your necessary daily requirements of stuff from food anyway.

I prefer, rather than the three meals, like five or six smaller meals over the course of the day. Or just do nothing but snack but make sure the snacks include meats and veggies and grains and all that good stuff so I’m still nourished. Eat something every three hours or so. An orange and a granola bar. A little later a bologna sandwich. A little later a small bowl of pasta. A little later another sandwich or a little bit of salad. A little later some baby carrots and some mashed or fried potatoes. And maybe some ice cream to cap it off. See! Got all the food groups in there.

Apparently, this is the healthier way to go, too. Keeps metabolism working. Maybe if more Americans ate like this, a lot of the weight problems would subside at least a little bit.

Oh, but surely families need meal time to talk and for parents to pry into their kids’ personal lives like paparazzi, right? Or, better yet, they could arrange some activity they all enjoy and snack through whatever that is. Something enjoyable rather than a soul-crushing obligation, like family is to so many people. Maybe if family members were free to just fix their own meals whenever hungry and not have to worry about being forced to eat together at a specific time when not everyone may be hungry, maybe everyone might get along better. Just sayin’.

I’d type more, but… I’m hungry. Screw you guys.

  1. You realise that Greek words don’t get to a Latin script the same way all the time? I’ve heard of grape leaves being “dolmas” and “dolmates”, but never “dolmathakia”. Same sort of thing for “melitzanosalata”. Calling someone an uncultured fuck for not knowing YOUR transliteration

  2. I agree Kat! Snacking is the way to go. When you think about it, snacking is a lot less likely to overwhelm your body. I’m not really approaching it scientifically, but logically, by dumping all kinds of fats, proteins, carbs, etc. into your body at once, it has a lot to deal with and may produce unsatisfactory results. Kind of like me when I get assigned 5 reasearch papers in one week. I like writing papers, just like everyone likes eating, but if they all need done at once they usually end up being crappy “speed papers.”
